The undergraduate degree programme is an inter-university offering delivered in cooperation with the University of Molise (Università degli Studi del Molise), with administrative offices based at the University of Sannio (Università del Sannio), that culminates in a joint degree being granted. The educational objectives pursued since the inception of the programme are aimed at developing graduates having the consequent professional profile, identified based on the needs of the world of industry/production. In fact, the programme provides comprehensive training to prepare a qualified professional civil engineer having transferable cross-disciplinary skills in various typical engineering branches including: geotechnical, structural, hydraulic engineering, transportation and road networks, building works, urban planning, industrial plants. The selection of ‘SSDs’ (Settori Scientifico-Disciplinari/Italian Scientific-Disciplinary Sectors) and the ‘CFUs’ (Crediti Formativi Universitari/Italian University Educational Credits) allocated to the various education and training activities, and the final exam are complementary to the underlying aim of achieving the educational objectives described above. The didactic components are organized into 20 taught courses. In addition to the Department’s multi-disciplinary buildings, dedicated laboratories are also available. The comprehensive educational offering includes training internship opportunities, arranged preferably at external companies and professional firms. In particular, the programme offering is structured around two curricula, namely, general engineering and building/construction engineering, organised as follows: the first year focus is on the disciplines of mathematics, physics, information technology, materials science and technology, and design; whereas subjects introduced in the second year include: for the general component - hydraulics, geotechnical engineering and building sciences, as well as transportation, urban planning, and road construction; and for the building component - history of architecture, technical architecture, and architectural design, with technical physics, and climatology of the built environment additionally providing coverage of green building topics; the third year conveys the acquired knowledge and competences towards application to basic problems and simple systems, with the design of reinforced concrete and steel structures, foundations and retaining structures; moreover, the general curriculum is rounded out with hydraulic engineering, and the building/construction curriculum with territorial design and urban planning. For more details see the course web page on the university portal.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

The professional knowledge and skills acquired during the undergraduate degree programme pertain to the design and maintenance of simple works in the construction, building, industrial plants and infrastructure sectors, and are based on knowledge of the various different aspects involved: geotechnical, hydraulics, structural, architectural design, road networks and transportation, urban planning and plant engineering. To be included among the skills acquired in the degree programme are knowledge of at least one European Union language other than Italian, and adequate computer/IT skills that would enable graduates to use currently existing systems and tools and to follow the technological evolution in the information sector.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Promising employment and professional career opportunities exist in design firms and companies operating in the areas of construction and maintenance of civil and building works, industrial plants and infrastructure, in the direction and management of construction sites, technical and commercial structures and facilities, in services-oriented companies and organizations, in public administration for the planning, management and control of urban and regional territorial works and services.
